With our last fields of Sweet Corn and Green Beans finished and the crops in your boxes, we now conclude the “Warm and Dry” season on our farm, and officially start the “Cold and Wet” one. Appropriate, then, that wind-driven rain is pounding the windows while I write and our field crew enjoys a well-deserved day off.

Unlike some years, when we have a 3-4 week gap between the two seasons, the transition this year has gone very smoothly with a nice overlap that makes it seem more natural and less jarring.

Another difference this year: the last month or so has seemed to favor the crops of both seasons. Our winter crops often look heat-stressed, wind-blown, and dusty going into November. Not so this year. They all are lush and happy-looking.

Between next week and the end of the year, you will be seeing mostly root-crops and greens in your boxes: Carrots, Broccoli, Cabbage, Celery, Lettuce, Leeks, Kale, Chard and Spinach in addition to Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes and Winter Squash.

Citrus season will start next week when we begin harvesting Satsuma Mandarins and Meyer Lemons.

We hope you’re ready to make the seasonal shift in your kitchens to follow the changes in our fields.

Enjoy the rain,

Pablito
