A gentle rain starteded falling this morning at 6 a.m. and we were greeted with a beautiful rainbow at sunrise. The drizzle continued off and on all morning — a dramatic shift from the 100 degrees we saw one week ago, and even the 90 degrees we had yesterday.
The timing was oddly perfect, as just yesterday we finished harvesting the last of our late plantings of summer crops like Tomatoes, Sweet Corn and Watermelons on what I hope will be the final 90 degree day of the year. Luckily we also picked enough Green Beans for your boxes. This morning the crew is picking leafy greens in rain gear and rubber boots.
A little bit of rain in October is a nice way to rinse off the trees and settle the dust, but anything more will really throw a wrench in our plans. We’ve still got a lot of work to do around the farm before winter turns it into a muddy mess.
We won’t have to worry about mud for long this time, though, as we’ve got a major windstorm coming on the backside of the rain. It will dry everything up very quickly, and by Monday we’ll be behind schedule on irrigation and the dust will be back.
In the next month, we will finish up our Fall planting, get the last of the winter squash out of the field, start removing the trellises from our tomato fields, and hopefully get some cover crop planted. Another light rain or two would be fine during that time. But once those tasks are done, we’ll be ready for the real rainy season to start.
Thanks,
Pablito
