Over the weekend, we got another very good soaking from the latest storm system to hit the state. The 2.5″ of rain we received brings the farm up average for the Halloween-Christmas period. And although we did not get any rain in October, the very unusual heavy rain we received in September more than made up for it. From a rain perspective, it feels pretty “normal” around here.
The recent rains pushed the “pause” button on the unusually cold weather we experienced in the second half of November. That’s a good thing, because just after Thanksgiving, the temperature fell to 26 degrees — our coldest ever November night. It was a close call for many of our crops, including mandarins, lemons, celery and lettuce. It’s still very cold every night, but the abundant moisture in the ground should keep temperatures from dropping to dangerous levels for a while.
With the Christmas Holiday falling on a weekend this year, we won’t be making any changes to our delivery schedule next week. We will be closed the following week, with no deliveries the last week of December. We will then resume deliveries as usual the week after New Year’s Day: January 4th.
All special orders for next week’s delivery should be placed via the webstore following our normal schedule. We will have lots of availability of most items.
As I mentioned before Thanksgiving, we will be raising the price of your CSA boxes for 2023 in order to offset our rising costs for staffing, energy, supplies and everything else that goes into farming. Small box subscribers in particular have seen fewer items as the overhead to produce and pack those boxes is very similar to that of the Medium and Large boxes. With the new prices, Small boxes will see an additional item in their boxes each week.
The new prices, as follows, will go into effect on January 11th:
Lastly, a reminder that you can give the give of Terra Firma to anyone who lives in our delivery area. Gift certificates for 2-week trial subscriptions are available on the webstore. If you have friends or family that you think might enjoy joining our CSA, please consider sharing it with them.
